Tim, Arin, & Ellie – Family Portraits { E K Powe & Here Comes the Sun Mural }

The second I saw these flowering pink Cherry Blossoms right alongside E K Powe Elementary school and 9th Street in downtown Durham, I KNEW I had to use them as a backdrop for a family portrait session. My vision came to life with this fantastic family of three.

Meet Tim, Arin, and their daughter, Ellie.

The weekend we met up was just the beginning to what would become a (very) chilly and rainy rest of the month (which – incidentally – meant that these stunning pink blossoms disappeared almost overnight after our shoot). To my delight, however, all three happily came out in the drizzle. We kept our fingers crossed and our breath held and, miraculously, the rain paused for almost our entire session so we could capture these images. The session started out on 9th Street, in front of E K Powe Elementary school. I’m seriously impressed that whoever designed the grounds of this school decided to plant all these trees – the entire front of the school was alive with bobbing and waving pink flowers! After dancing and spinning around under the cherry blossom trees (Ellie eagerly smelling all the flowers while she was at it!), we hopped back in the car to drive over to the Here Comes the Sun mural off Main Street.

I hadn’t actually visited this mural before our session, so I was delighted to find that it butted up to a very large and very empty parking lot- perfect for pictures! Finally, we finished up our session by meandering downtown, through alleyways and by interesting walls and doors. Ellie and her cheerfully bouncing curls led the way for us (but seriously – aren’t her curls THE BEST? I was swooning over them the entire time I was editing this session.)

Downtown mural

Downtown Durham isn’t massively big, but it still confuses me with its many one-way streets and unexpected turns. Thankfully, Arin was a pro at navigating us and picking easy parking. Looking through these photographs, I’m so excited for the weather to finally warm up (please, March, please!) and to explore Durham by foot and by bike a bit more. I love how many unexpected pops of color and fun murals it has, not to mention all the delicious breweries, restaurants, and bars tucked every which way! Durham, I have a feeling you and I are going to become besties.

Tim, Arin, and Ellie – enjoy the photos! Capturing unposed moments of a family in the heart of their home city is what I love best. <3
